We are in the end stretch! I am home already and Matt is in the airport in NY waiting for his connection here.

The house looks gorgeous, all decorated for Christmas - my favorite time of year.

As promised, here is a picture of our local El Corte Ingles, decked out for the holidays. Yes, those lights actually sparkle, too!

And now, for a mad dash of errands and preparations!

Just a quick update on travel arrangements for any of you that are coming into town for the wedding.

Hotels
The following hotels are closest to the church and our home (i.e. the center of activities). These are the hotels mapped in the side bar.

Holiday Inn Express - ranges from $119-124
Extended Stay - ranges around $85
La Quinta - ranges around $129
Springhill Suites - ranges $79-99

The hotels all indicated that the best rates can be found on their websites. If you are looking at the chains, please be sure to look for SOUTH Austin locations.

Flights and Transportation
The Austin Bergstrom International Airport is relatively close to us, on the south east side of town. All major rental car companies are found at the airport. Alternatively, if you need a ride, please let us know (including arrival/departure day/time and flight) and we can have someone pick you up from the airport.

Happy December!

Our travel arrangements are finally set, we will be getting into Austin around the 18th, just in time for the Holidays and with plenty of time for all those last minute wedding things.

In other news, we have our first Christmas tree! Due to my still shaky on the fly metric conversions it is a bit taller than anticipated, but still glorious.

We've been exploring bit by bit the Madrid Christmas lights- so far the best can be found on our local El Corte Ingles (picture coming soon, hopefully).

I almost forgot! Here is a picture of the china pattern. It can be found on the Macy's registry (link on the left). However, aside from China, we also have updated our registry at Linens'n'Things (link added to the left, too).

With all the changes and new adventures coming up, we still decided to do a traditional registry for our wedding.

Invitation responses are starting to come in; everytime I call home I am read a list of names. Don't forget we please ask for your response by December 6th.
With advent right around the corner, we are nearing the end. Just about a month out from the wedding and excitement is building. So many things have been accomplished and now the troops stand ready to descend upon the hall and decorate and prepare for the big festivities. This truly will be a most joyous holiday season!

Preparing for the wedding, I wanted to share a little bit about the four lovely young women that all agreed to be my bridesmaids. Perhaps Matt can post about his groomsmen some time as well...

Candace (Maid of Honor) has been my cousin for, well forever. There are plenty of stories from us growing up, each family visit to Rhode Island a treasure trove in and of itself. I'm sure something about me biting her when we were two years old will come up, as it always does!

Candace is currently a slave to the books at Roger Williams University Law School. Great thing is, I recall one summer, we must have been perhaps eight or nine years old, Candace knew that she wanted to be a lawyer even back then. Over the years she has become an inspiration with the vast knowledge and passion for government and politics. This past winter we took a short field trip to the LBJ Library at the University of Texas, what a way to see her in action!

Kathleen is the youngest Hartley, my new sister in law. That being said, she is quite plucky and not to be underestimated. I trust this has much to do with growing up under her two brothers. I've truly enjoyed getting to know Kat little by little over the last few years.

She is part of the news breaking Middlebury Quidditch team as well as a plethora of other quirky activities, most of which I am just not hip enough to understand or follow. On a more personal note, I am excited to have Kathleen take part in the wedding, as I can shamelessly point out, Matt is quite fond of his sister (but don't tell anyone).

Cousett has been one of my oldest friends from Austin. We met back in high school at good old Saint Michael's Academy. Not only has she been fiercely loyal and loving to me, but she is truly part of the extended family.

Over the years, as we left high school and embarked on the journey to become the people we are today, our families stayed close, celebrating (and celebrating and celebrating and celebrating) and sharing all our ups and downs together. Today it is hard to imaging life without any of them when it comes to home in Austin.

Cousett has blossomed from the quiet, shy friend in high school to become among other things a leader in her work, now in the IT department at St. Edward's University (which has also has been the stomping grounds for countless degrees for her, it seems). I'm not even sure what exactly she does, but it involves everything from mentoring up and coming students in technology to attending conferences in Berlin, Germany.

Last, though by no means least, Julia is another part of the extended Family in Austin.
Although she escaped Saint Michael's (unlike her brother's - all three of which we at SMA with Cousett and I), Julia hasn't missed out on the many years our families have plotted together.

Over the years, Julia and I have grown closer over the shared plight of our crazy families and church-lady mothers. Her most insightful gift to me, this past year was a hilarious little book called Lamb by Christopher Moore.

Julia is currently back in Austin, working in the family business and keeping everyone on their toes with her shrewd if unexpected insights.

A big, warm thanks to these four wonderful people. Though with the long distance they've been spared much planning aside from some truly epic e-mails from me with long lists and questions, their presence and help at the wedding is a blessing. Not to mention the fun they will bring to the reception!

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to the US both for work and for wedding planning. Things are moving along great, almost ready for the big day!

The invitations should be going out as I write this. They are beautiful, my parents did a fantastic job with them.

In addition to the existing registry at Macy's, we added another registry at Linens 'n' Things (oh, and the china pattern changed, turns out the set did not have that many pieces and I actually did not like it in person)

What else was accomplished in the four days that I was home? Well, there was a wonderful surprise bridal shower (thank you!!), a gown fitting, visit with the church people- both the deacon and the church coordinator, discovering the wedding favors, and lastly a sit down session with the florist. This last meeting was rocky at first but once she started pulling flowers out of the cases to show me worked great.

So the only big item on the list is to get in touch with the DJ to share some of our ideas and whatnot.

We have completed our pre-caana requirements, the marriage preparation for the church. Not much to say about it, though lots of food for thought and more importantly, for discussion.

I will be heading to the States for two weeks on Tuesday - Matt, meanwhile, will hold down the fort and try to navigate paying the electric bill and our old Spanish landlady. We shall see what happens.

Wedding preparations are, as usual, moving ahead. Every phone call from home now includes a list of decisions around details, getting more minute every time.

Part of my trip to the States includes a micro-trip to Austin for wedding preparations (and a much needed visit with the family). Itinerary to include
  • Visit with the coordinator/catering/decoration guru Gloria
  • Meeting with the DJ
  • Gown fitting and alterations (gotta get the bustle and bow)
  • Appointment with a florist
  • Gift registry meeting at Macy's with the consultant
There is one more, but it slips my mind right now. Besides, momzilla is the master scheduler for this trip. Also, part of this trip includes an incursion into Garden Ridge (home of the craftiness) to look at flowers/candles/decorations/wedding favors...

This trip is starting to make Matt's two weeks in solitary in Spain look relaxing!
